And some of it is me realizing that I hated certain characters for really dumb and immature reasons. Most of them having to do with a weird phase I went through, where I shunned anything that was feminine. I blame having older brothers on that, I never wanted to be perceived as a "girly-girl".
Now I don't have those reservations, I don't care at all really.
I am pretty open about my many obsessions and now have no qualms about sitting down with a bowl of lucky charms and cringing/squealing over shoujo anime.
It's very freeing.
One of the characters that I used to take issue with was Elizabeth Swann.
I didn't necessarily hate her, but I didn't like her and that dislike grew as the series went on. Actually, I have quite a few things to say about the decline in quality that plagues the POTC series but that's a whole other post.
I always thought of her as a damsel in distress, and she is. but not in the ways you would think. She flips the troupe on its end. And evolves into something else entirely by the end of the series.
Now I have almost the opposite view of her.
I might've been distracted in my youth by a certain pirate who stole the show. (guyliner was the key to my heart then and still is it seems.)
Elizabeth is the main character in a way. The whole show starts with her as an idealistic kid who thinks it would be the most exciting thing to meet a pirate. Then ten years later she gets her wish.
And probably immediately regrets it.
I mean Jack Sparrow does save her life but then threatens it a moment later. All in all, if that was my interaction I'd be one part thrilled and the other furious. Which was essentially her reaction.
Even when I was younger I loved that she gritted her teeth at him and called him despicable, I also love how full circle this scene comes in the second one.
When she gets tangled up with a gaggle of cursed pirates, due to a small lie she tells. I think her opinion of pirates from then on is forever changed.
They're not mysterious anymore, they don't represent adventure. They're just men. Dirty, ill-mannered men and it makes her reevaluate everything. She goes from being terrified to just being defiant and annoyed.
She gets pushed around, kidnapped, and harassed, but takes none of it lying down. If anything the more she's pushed, the more she pushes right back.
I love that she barely ever hides her emotions, she's a livewire. She cries, screams, and gets in people's faces. She never apologizes, she knows what she wants. The true ingredients of a strong female character, not just one who shuns anything feminine or has absurd strength. At first, she's defenseless, even though she attempts to fight back against her captors she's unskilled and at a disadvantage.
Doesn't stop her from coming at Barbossa with a knife.
If you disagree with me that she's the kind of female character we've been begging for, well you're wrong.
She doesn't accept defeat. Whatever anyone throws at her she takes and throws it back. She learns and adapts, and she does most of this while wearing a dress or a chemise. I love that she almost never complains about being a woman if anything she complains more about men, corsets, and pirates. She doesn't shed her feminity to even the playing field she utilizes it to work in her favor.
From her first interaction with Jack Sparrow, she gets to see firsthand how pirates treat women and learns how she's viewed by one. A pretty plaything more or less, I think every girl has had this experience at least once. It angers her, and rightfully so. Then Barbossa treats her more or less the same, need I mention the dress she's forced to wear at dinner. She does initially refuse and throws his own words back at him, but at that point in time she's defenseless, and all her attempts to gain the upper hand fail.
But she uses all of these experiences. She learns to use the damsel image to get what she wants and she weaponizes her sexuality. Which honestly is really progressive for a 2000's Disney movie. I think Jack and Norrington get the brunt of this and to be honest they deserve it.
Norrington saw her as a prize to be won, and despite being around as she grew up seemed to know nothing about her.
Jack's intentions weren't any better, it was clear what he wanted. (Don't come for me I actually ship her and Jack so)
When she's marooned with Jack on that island, I think is when the last bit of luster of her childhood hero wears off. He's a drunk, his exploits were exaggerated and he isn't half as impressive as she thought. She seduces him, gets him drunk, and then lights everything on fire.
It's incredibly satisfying. I love that she carries the duality of Persephone throughout all the movies. She can be feminine and smiling, while also cutting her way through the many obstacles in her path. She doesn't get respect so she starts demanding it.
Before she even learns how to fight she's intent on defending herself. Using whatever advantages she needs to get the upper hand
Beckett takes that away from her and she comes at him with a pistol. (Are we seeing a pattern here)
So I love that her whole thing this go-around is like 'give me my fiance back.'
My favorite bit will forever be when the men are all fighting and she mocks them, throws things at them, pretends to faint. Anything to get them to stop, but they completely ignore her, and it always makes me laugh. She's just so fed up with them all. Which I don't blame her for.
She kinda gives up her moral high ground here. She does what she needs to, her sole purpose is securing Will and their future. Her behavior matches the situation she finds herself in. She takes on the morals of those around her. "Take what you can, give nothing back"
She toys with Jack like he toys with her. Leading to the moment that parallels their first meeting except for this time she's in control. She uses his attraction to her, to sacrifice his life for hers, Will's, and the rest of the crew.
It's not a moral choice, it's not a good choice, but it's one that she made without hesitation. It's one Jack would never make himself. Because of a truth they had both been skirting around
She's a pirate.
I also love that she doesn't apologize for it.
And unlike Jack, she's able to make tough decisions. She doesn't run and she's definitely more ruthless than him. I've always found him to be the type that seemed to accidentally have become a pirate, by no fault of his own. And most likely due to his soft nature. He tends to do the right thing.
Elizabeth's nature is much harsher.
She can be cruel. She has a ferocity to her, that none of the men match. She's something to be feared.
It's something Jack seems to recognize in her, and he takes her betrayal in stride. Almost as if it was expected. He votes her as the pirate King because he knows she'll do whatever it takes to win. She always does.
That's probably the one reason why I prefer her and Jack to her and Will. Jack never tries to tame her.
Will seems to love the person he assumed she was, but to be fair they seemed to sort it out in the end. Opposites attract, and I think part of the reason Elizabeth loves Will is because he's the person she wishes she was honest to a fault and well decent. She wanted a life with him.
I do think it's intresting that even though Will is the one grappling with the fact that he has the blood of a pirate running in his veins. Elizabeth is the one who seems to be born of the sea.
(Why did I ever complain about this)
She's more of a pirate than Will and Jack could ever be.
She's also probably one of the best female characters Disney could have given me, and I snubbed it because I was a foolish child.
I have since mended my ways, and I'm now grateful that I got to grow up with characters like Elizabeth. I sincerely hope we get more.
I will also be forever jealous that Kiera Knightly at seventeen got to film with Orlando Bloom (My first crush) and Johnny Depp (My obsession) resulting in my ultimate comfort film. That has a dash of everything.
Here's to Elizabeth Swann!
Hamlette is hosting a pirate party. There's a tag and a fantastic giveaway if your interested.
Elizabeth would approve of this apology.
ReplyDeleteI have a few characters that lost lustre in my eyes over the years. Mainly the moody "bad boy" who was so romantically tragic, now simply bores me. It is fun to grow up!
Thanks, I hope so.
DeleteIt's sad when it happens. They bore me too.
It is!
Maturity can certainly shift your perspective. I was very much a Norrington fangirl as a teenager, so I never understood why Elizabeth had zero interest in him -- it took me a long time and growing up to realize that she wouldn't have suited him or that life anyway. She was better off with "one of her own kind," aka, a Pirate. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt can. I've always liked him, I never understood why everyone disliked him so much. I think maybe because her father approved of him, so she was like no. Yeah, I don't think they would have made a good match, but I can't blame him for wanting it.
DeleteExactly! :D
Eh, she had heart eyes for Will since they yanked him out of the ocean and dumped him on the deck. Norry never had a chance. Oh well. More for me. ;)
DeleteShe really did. Poor thing. That's the way to look at it.
DeleteXD
I LOVE all your thoughts on this! I, too, went through a weird stage where I kind of stuffed down my full self and like??? I have no idea why???? Once I got over that and fully embraced all my quirks, I've been such a happier person. ^_^
ReplyDeleteBUT ANYWAY. Elizabeth Swann, yes! She is an interesting person. Alas, she's never been my favorite character. Buuut I think that's partially due to the fact that I've never been much of a Kiera Knightly fan. (Sowwy.) STILL THOUGH. I 100% agree she's a FASCINATING character. The movies really wouldn't have worked without her--she moves things forward and really drives the plot. I love the complexity of her character and the many changes she goes through. It really was a bold move on Disney's part.
So BASICALLY, even though she's not my favorite character, I do think she's a GOOD character. Very well-written and intriguing!
Thanks! It's such a strange thing to do, but I think we all do at some point. Yeah me too.
DeleteShe really is interesting which I can't say for some female characters. I get that. I've always been a Kiera fan so it endeared her more to me. (No need to apologize, everyone loves different characters)
She is, I didn't realize how much she drove the plot and story until recently. Same I love a good character arc.
It was, I'm actually surprised they did it that way, and not heavy handed like they were with the 5th one.
It's nice that you can appreciate her, even if she's not one of you favorites. Agreed!
Okay, but your caption "why did I ever complain about this" under the photo of Elizabeth in full pirate's regalia had me cackling. She's gorgeoussssssssssss *heart eyes*
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen these movies, but it just dawned on me that they're on Disney+, so, whoop whoop! Guess it's time for me to finally give them a try! Strong female characters ahoy!
I was hoping someone would appreciate that. XD
DeleteShe is!
Ooo lucky you, you get to see them for the first time. They really are quite good, fun adventure movies. The first one is the absolute best! Then I think the 4 and 2 the rest are still good, but not my favorites. Yes, we love a strong female, ahoy!
*claps loudly* Skye, I can't even describe how much I love this post. I have so many characters I needlessly hated. Not because they were a badly written character or had a personality that I find annoying, or anything like that. *sighs* Ah, the not like other girls phase. I feel like most of us have gone through it at some point. I really should make a post on that. It's been on my mind for quite some time now.
ReplyDeleteI've always liked Elizabeth, though she isn't my favorite. I definitely agree with you that while in some ways she IS a damsel in distress, she doesn't fit the trope. She changes it. And, to me, she never felt helpless. Like, sure she definitely wasn't in a position of power, but she was smart and resourceful and strong and lots of other great things. She has a great character arc, too. You brought up so many interesting things here. Great post.
Thanks, I'm so glad you love it. Right, it seems to be something a lot of us did. Yeah because their usually fine. I hate that phase, but I more or less get why we all have to have it. You should! It's a really interesting topic.
DeleteAt least you liked her I used to be like ew. XD Yeah, she subverts it in the best way. I love that she's a fighter.
Smart and resourceful are the best traits to have. I love her arc. Thanks so much!
Yeah, I wasn't an Elizabeth fan at all, but she grew on me (despite Kiera Knightley's horrible acting skills). I don't think she is as strong or unique a character as some of the other characters, but I think she grows as a character from a spoilt girl into a woman, and I don't think I'd call her brutal, I feel like she makes the choices like they all end up doing, all the compromises and double-crossings the main group do, but they always end up all right and with each other. I'm a Will and Elizabeth shipper, they have a few bumps but ultimately are loyal and love and choose each other, I think Jack all on his lonesome is the right position for his character, and I want Norrington all to myself thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteI think 3,2,1 are my favorites, they are the canon ones. 4 isn't really canon to me, Jack isn't Jack, Norrington's dead, Will and Elizabeth aren't there, I don't like most of the other added characters. 5, well, the last reunion scene is lovely, but everything else is a mockery.
I like that she grows on people despite any dislike. ( I can't agree with that, but I get not liking someone's acting definitely wouldn't help.) I don't think anyone could beat Jack in the unique bit. XD
DeleteShe does have quite a big arc. Maybe fierce is a better word. That's true they all more or less double cross each other. I get why, their pretty cute. You can tell they love each other. He does seem to be best on his own.
Ha, love that!
That makes sense the third one just doesn't have the same energy as the first two but I still like it. I personally liked the 4th one. It was fun and a good movie on it's own. The 5th was pretty bad, despite a few moments it fell pretty flat.
I love this!!! I've been really excited for this post since you told me about it and it's honestly everything I was hoping it would be. I really didn't appreciate Elizabeth Swann enough when I first watched it, I mean I definitely liked her but I didn't really appreciate her for what she was at the time. Loved all your points and descriptions of her. She deserves more appreciation and I wish I'd appreciated her character more earlier on, but better late than never I guess.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm glad it met your expectations. It's weird that she seemed passed over by so many of us. She was ahead of her time. Ah glad you like them. She does, well now you can at least. Exactly!
DeleteShe is honestly such a great character, and played by Keira Knightley no less! I love your take on her!
ReplyDeleteShe is! Yay, another Kiera lover. Thank you so much!
DeleteThis is absolutely fabulous. I have loved Elizabeth from the first movie, and it made me a total Keira Knightley fan... but I can see how Elizabeth would rub some people the wrong way, and I'm so happy you've come around. You're right, she's a much more piratey pirate than many of the dudes in the series, and just all around a terrific, meaty, well-rounded character.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I think had I been older when I first saw it, I would've liked her too, but I was a fickle 11 year old who was obsessed with Jack Sparrow. Kiera Knightly is so good. I'm glad I got over my initial dislike.
DeleteGlad you agree, we don't get many like her. She was such a wild card.
That scene in #2 where all the guys are fighting and she's trying to get their attention is the best! I really like the points that you made here and it made me appreciate her character more, especially saying why Jack voted for her to be the pirate king!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it! It never fails to make me laugh. Glad you liked it, and oh good. She deserves the appreciation.
DeleteI always love that he did that!
It's so fun being done with girlish thoughts! I liked how Elizabeth Swan has feminine charm, etc etc. A friend told me last night that I looked like her . . . kinda sweet ;p

It really it! Same, I like that they didn't try to make her more masculine. That's such a nice compliment! She's beautiful and so are you. :D
DeleteI never minded Elizabeth nor was I inclined to be jealous of her either. I always thought she was cool and never needed to prove anything to anybody.
ReplyDeleteI tend to be very extreme in my emotions. XD
DeleteLove that!
Ah, this is my sort of post. A woman is both feminine and strong, and not ashamed of it and doesn't try to be masculine? YUSS. Honestly my favourite sort of women ever. Beautiful post here. I loved all of your thoughts here.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it! Yes, most characters tend to only get one of those things and it's usually strength. Mine too.
DeleteThank you so much!
This post was so great! I used to find Elizabeth annoying, but now I do like her, and find her very amusing, haha. She's fierce, that's for sure, and bold, and I respect that.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Glad I'm not the only one who did at first. She really is.
DeleteAll the things I'm trying to be.
