Birthday Mishaps

Amidst all of my anxieties about life, my future, and just the general state of the world. My day to day life has been surprisingly funny and good lately. So I thought I would share one of those antidotes.

It was my Dad's birthday two days ago and I stressed about it more than I needed to. Mainly because he's incredibly hard to buy for. If he wants something he buys it. (within reason of course) I did manage to find him something this year, so that took away some of the stress.

I shouldn't have worried, he came up with his own plans to celebrate. He bought himself a side by side. (If you don't know what that is a quick google search should explain) He got an amazing deal on it. But both my mom and I were less than enthusiastic about it, imagining the worst happening. The injuries that it would bring.

My Dad didn't seem bothered by any of that. As soon as he brought it home he took three of my younger siblings out for a ride. He did put helmets on them and these contraptions actually have seatbelts so safer than you'd think.

They loved it of course the little hellions.

I should mention here that we live kinda in the mountains and right beside a fairly huge forest. So it is something we can use a lot and he claims to want to use it for hunting so it wasn't a useless buy. (My dad's an Intj and I don't think he's capable of doing that.)

He took me and my older siblings out, and right away we saw a herd of deer. Which was pretty cool. We went around a few trails up and down some fairly steep hills. It was a blast except for the freezing wind blasting us in the face. We headed back to warm up and he somehow talked my mom into going too.

She had the most misgivings but agreed to go. My sister and I tagged along for that ride simply to see her reaction. It went great, at first she was a little frantic and kept telling him to slow down. Yelled some random things about not trusting my Dad or the government. She started to enjoy it eventually. He followed basically the same trail we had taken earlier we went down a super steep hill and then into a wooded area turned a corner and something suddenly broke. At first, we thought we were stuck on something and my Dad couldn't find anything wrong. I saw grey stuff on the ground behind us, which turned out to be oil.

Then we quickly came to the terrible conclusion that something had burst and we couldn't drive it back.

This was bad for a few reasons it was nearly 5:00 and getting dark, it's freezing because ugh Canada, and lastly we would have to hike back up this ginormous, monstrosity of a hill.

So with no other choices, we started hiking out of the trees and back to the trail. After we were almost clear my Dad decided to run back and try one more thing with the side by side. (because splitting up in a forest is always smart.)

My sister, mom, and I stopped just out of the trees and waited for him. Talking about 411's, bigfoot, and bears because we're that family. When my sister suddenly went pale and her eyes bugged out. This completely broke the calm facade I had been pretending to have.

"There's someone in the trees." She hissed. Which is basically the last thing you want to hear when standing in the middle of nowhere.

I did the whole 'wut' thing and she grabbed my face to angle it towards the person. Me being the reasonable person that I am. I closed my eyes because the logic of 'if I can't see you, you can't see me' has always stuck with me. I luckily had cell service so I called my dad and covertly said. "We're not alone." In the most melodramatic way ever.

So he basically ran back to us just in time for this woman to break through the trees in front of us. She had walked in from the road and had gotten a little turned around so we gave her directions and went our merry way.

I was relieved that the person my sister had seen wasn't Micheal Myers and just a woman in runners (poor shoe choice for the snowy woods but I won't judge.)

After that close call, we began the long walk home. It was fairly uneventful thank goodness. But my mom did lament her decision to come. Which I couldn't really blame her for.

I started to enjoy our walk filled with banter and insults. It also showed just how perfect for each other my parents are. My mom decided to lead because she wanted to get back to the kids. At one point she picked up a big branch to protect herself with but decided it was far too heavy and dropped it in the middle of the trail. ( My Dad threw it back in the trees when he came up to it.)

She also at some point dropped her scarf, which he collected without comment. (Intj's and Enfps are soulmates and it really shows) They do drive each other nuts though. Well, we all do really.

We made it back safe and sound, and the vehicle that my brother dubbed the Razor Crest is in the shop getting fixed.

My mom has decided that she and the younger kids will never ride it again.

Hope this little mishap was a bit entertaining. (I'm currently suffering from a cold which I'm pretty sure is related)

  1. The chaotic energy going on in this post, it's hilarious.
You guys meet a concerning amount of people in the woods and I'm really glad you guys didn't die. You really do have a Diana Wynne Jones type of life. I meant it ironically the first time I said it, but you didn't have to keep proving it XD
Loved everybody's reactions to everything. It's just so on brand for you guys.

We really do, It's what we get for living on the edge of the woods I guess. I love that, hope it helps my writing.
      You jinxed us ;)
      Thanks, it is.

  3. This is a hilarious story! XD At the same time I feel so bad for you! Long walks are not my favorite thing. At all. Your parents are adorable and match each other so well! Oh my word, I was dying of laughter at the part where you called your dad. XD Thanks for making me laugh today, Skye!

    1. Right! No worries, I like walks and it went by pretty quickly. I get that though, would have preferred to drive.
I keep trying to tell them that. XD
My sister was laughing too. XD You're welcome!

  5. Oh my word, I love this story! (I mean--I feel bad for you. But it's hilarious.) And it's so true--INTJs and ENFP/ESFPs are really good for each other!

  7. Oh my goodness, so much to say about this post.
First of all, your GIF usage is on point, as usual.
Second of all, this story is hilarious, but I also feel really, really bad for you. Long walks at night in the cold are no fun.
The part where you called your dad sounds like something I would say.
One time while I was walking to my Aunt's house (she lives in a house next door to my family's), and I heard a noise. It turned out to be our dog, but I was all ready to attack.
I stress about holidays way too much. Especially birthdays.
Okay, I loved your family's reactions to everything. INTJs and ENFPs really are good for each other. My sister's an ISTJ and my other sister's an ENFP. They drive each other crazy, but they work well together.
And,ugh, I'm sorry you have a cold. Hope you get better soon.

    1. I was hoping the gifs fit it.
I'm glad you found it funny, the walk really wasn't that bad all things considered.
      Love that.
      Always be prepared, right. XD
Same, I've been trying to enjoy them but it's hard not to stress.
Thanks! They are. Ooo yeah my sister and I drive each other crazy too.
I'm at the tail end of it now, thanks!

  8. Well, this post just MADE. MY. DAY. I'm grinning and giggling so much now! I repeat what everyone else said: The chaotic energy was GOLD.

And oh my goodness, I'm talking a little bit about the INTJ/ENFP relationships in my post this next Monday because two of my characters in my NaNo novel were that and I just ADORE those relationships SO. MUCH. My real life bestie is an INTJ and watching her interact with ENFPs truly gives me life. So the fact that your parents are that is the best thing ever and I love them. XD

What a time you guys had, my goodness. Seeing a person IN THE WOODS THOUGH. I would have been so panicked. o.o Thank goodness it was nothing serious. I love your mentality of if YOU can't see them than obviously they can't see you. Lololol. I mean OF COURSE. Once you SEE the danger, that's when it becomes real.

We totally need more Hoffert anecdotes! This was GREAT!!! But I do hope you get over your cold soon! <3

    1. I was hoping for that reaction! My family seems to have a lot of that energy.

Oh really, love that kind of coincidence. Ooo can't wait for that. Same it's such a fun match, like their almost complete opposites or something. Aw love that! They don't even realize how entertaining they are. XD

We did. It's the most terrifying thing honestly. I was, but badly trying to hide it. I was so happy about that. It's like my panic response or something. I'm just like Nooope! XD
      Exactly.

I was thinking I might share some more, it was a fun post to write. THANK YOU!!! I'm almost free of it. <3

  9. That was hilarious, wow, what an adventure. And out in the country has a whole different level of meaning in Canada than it does in my state. Coyotes and deer are our main large wildlife, a bear wandering this close to us is rare, and we in our state only have black bears and no tragedies in centuries maybe.

    1. Thanks! It really was an adventure. Probably, we get a lot of bears going through our yard and had to get a bear trap once because one wouldn't leave, their pretty big too and not too scared of people. I've also seen a few moose and tons of deer. Mainly just hear the coyotes howling.
I don't think we've had many bear attacks here either, mainly because most people know to watch out for them.

  10. Ha, nice story. My wife is an INTJ, and I’m an ENFP, so I can further attest to the truth of that connection. It’s a good life. God bless.

  12. OMG, What a story!

Being lost in the middle of nowhere in a Canadian winter where bears roam would be terrifying. So glad everything came out ok, but this is honestly a hilarious and chaotic birthday story that will never be forgotten!

  14. I always keep on forgetting to check back for new posts and then I miss several and usually the latest post was done weeks ago so that seems weird to comment. But I decide to do now cause this story was so fun to read and I enjoyed it a ton. Your parents sound so awesome and entertaining to be around with. And you know this whole thing reminded me of the another story that you shared on this blog. I think it was your second post.

    1. I do that all the time. I fall behind on posts and end up commenting on super old ones. I don't mind though. :D
I appreciate that, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! They have their moments, but yeah their a lot of fun.
Oh the snowshoe story! That was a time, I guess nothing has really changed.
It's so cool that you remember that.

    2. Oh, that's good then. When I remember to check back again, I'll be sure to comment! (And if I find a previous post that I desperately want to comment on, I'll comment on them too!)
Same with my parents too. It's really an honour to experience their moments, since life is just a little better with their fun and humour.
Yes, that one. Maybe not, but it's nice to see that sometimes things never change!
Well, to be fair, I only just read it a few months ago. I am new at your blog and I like going back to read old posts to see the journey. I haven't gone too far yet. Life makes it hard to find free time to read extra posts. I think I went as far as the beautiful people: sibling edition.

    3. Yeah, I love comments! (Awesome! :D)
It's cool that your parents are like that too. Humor does help a lot.
I'll never forget tripping in the snowshoes. XD It is comforting that some things stay the same.
That makes sense, it's a more memorable one too. Happy to have you, hope your enjoying the posts you have read.
I like seeing other bloggers journeys too. It's cool to see the progression.
It does, I have a hard time keeping up. Back when I did more character focused stuff, been meaning to get back to that.

    4. Comments are just the best! :)
      Yes. :D Yes, it does!
Haha. Yeah, it is totally comforting!
It is actually. Thanks! :) I have enjoyed the ones I have read a lot!
Yes, it is so cool! There is a whole life within all those posts, and it's awesome to see the growth and victories and everything else. I just loved it and I wouldn't miss it for the whole world if I can!
Glad I'm not the only one! At the moment, I am so behind with all of the normal present day posts. Uh, oh, well, I will catch up soon! Yeah, I just LOVED reading about your characters from your Beauty and the Beast retelling! That would be awesome to read about characters again cause I just love reading about those posts!! No pressure of course.
