Get to Know Me Tag (Writer's Edition)

Miranda tagged me for this. You guys should go check out her blog. She has fantastic taste and is writing a Sleepy Hollow retelling!

I've been wanting to do a tag like this, I tend to forget that newer readers might not know me. And as much as I love being mysterious it's probably good that you guys know a little about me.

Vital States and Appearance

Name- Skye Hoffert

Nicknames- Kye, ky-ky, I'm sure there's more but these are the only ones I can think of

Birthday- August 30th

Hair length and color- It's a dark nutmeg brown, and occasionally gets sun streaks. It's a shaggy bob right now that just scrapes the tops of my shoulders. Sometimes it looks like Kiera Knightly's hair when she has it up in Pride & Prejudice and sometimes it looks like Jim Hawkin's hair in Treasure Planet. I love both.

Eye color- Brown, I like to think copper brown.

Braces/piercings/tattoos- I had braces a while back ago, what a pain. As for piercings just my ears tragically. No tattoos either.

Righty or Lefty- Right-handed

Ethnicity- It's hard to say, I've got a bit of everything. Irish, English, and German on my dad's side, and Russian, Polish, and Native on my mom's side. I once told someone I was a Heinz 57 they didn't get the joke.

Firsts

First novel written- I actually self-published it, which was such a mistake. It's horrendous. A fantasy novel about fairy-inspired races, and was probably inspired by my love of LoTR. Was supposed to be my take on the chosen one trope but twisting it. Very cliche, very strange to look back on. But there are some concepts from it I want to repurpose.

First novel completed- A Shadow of Doubt, the same aforementioned book.

Award for Writing- I was one of the five winners in The Rooglewood 'Five Poisoned Apples' contest. Still so surreal.

First Publication-'Falling Snow,' my winning story. It's a retelling of Snow White set in a 1920's circus that's run by fae.

Conference- Realm Makers 2019  had an amazing time! Got to meet so many of my blogger friends and got some fantastic writing tips too.

Query/pitch- I haven't done this yet, but I will be hopefully soon. If I can get my current draft finished.

Favorites

Novel (That you wrote)- I'm not even a quarter of the way into it but The Fairy & the Artist (working title) I love the folklore, the setting, getting to put all the things I love into it, and the Dark Academia elements. Plus it feels the most personal if that makes sense.

Genre- Fantasy/ Urban Fantasy I've always loved fairytales, magic, otherworlds.

Author- Diana Wynne Jones and a recent addition Markus Zusak ( I read The Book Thief and it broke me)

Writing Music- I listen to a bit of everything honestly. It depends on the emotional context and the book. I've been listing to the Seelie by CLANN while writing lately and it's so atmospheric, chilling, and sometimes has this dissonance. It fits my story perfectly especially the Unseelie track

Time to Write- Between 10-12 in the afternoon. I've had my coffee, I'm alive. It's when my brain is working the best. Though I tend to write at all hours, sometimes just snatches of things on napkins or in my phone notes.

Writing Snack- Coffee or tea

Movie- Ugh such a hard question I love way too many. But Logan Lucky always makes me laugh.

Writing Memory- How the first chapter of Falling Snow just flowed out of me. I remember that it was just there. Doesn't happen very often. usually have to work for it.

Childhood Book- I had so many influences, but The Hobbit was one of my all-time favorites. I made my Dad read it to me, then I read it over again many times.

Currently

Reading-The Dark is Rising (Has folklore which surprised me), House on the Cerulean Sea (Got this one because someone said it was similar to Howl's Moving Castle, I like it so far), and I'm low-key reading the book The Untamed was based on. I got to the Yi City Arc. Read Xue Yang's death then stopped. I love my little gremlin. (Can't wait to see him in anime form)

Writing- I've mainly been writing The Fairy & the Artist, but I have written snippets for Fool's Bet and my Ghost Story one. And have been replotting Bleeding Roses. So a bit of everything.

Listening to Do I give my basic stuff like Conan Grey, Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Halsey or give some more interesting ones like Lorenisalone ( My Fav), Måneskin (Gosh I love them), The Kid Laroi (Living for The Weekend and Chase Atlantic vibe he has) So much K-pop. If I listed all of them this post would be too long. I love music.

Watching-

Okay, dramas first. The Witch's Diner (for the aesthetic) The Great Shaman Ga Doo-Shim (Giving me some Lockwood & Co vibes) The Devil Judge (My sister and I have way too many inside jokes about this one, so good!) Beyond Evil ( Quite possibly the best K drama I've watched since Vincenzo it's fantastic, we have four episodes left and still have no clue who the killer is. It plays with your head. Super dark but amazing!) Nevertheless ( I don't want to admit that I'm watching this one but I am, not for the leads though more for Bitna and Nam Kyu Hyun. I'm a sucker for Song Kang but his character is trash.) Kiss Goblin (Because I wanted more Bae In-Hyuk after My Roommate is a Gumiho) Handmade Love (because I love Lee Soo-hyuk)

Anime- The Ancient Magus Bride and Ghibli movies. (I'm dragging my feet with The Ancient Magus Bride because I absolutely love it and don't want it to end.)

Movies- Working our way through the Die Hard movies we have one more I think. Pan's Labyrinth ( A new favorite) Beauty and the Beast 2014 ( watch it in french, gorgeous visuals really like what they did, does have some questionable cgi but I really enjoyed it.) Silence of the Lambs (Not quite sure what I think parts of it felt like a Criminal Minds episode) Rurouni Kenshin films (bloody, beautiful, love them) Oh and Pipeline had a lot of fun with that one.

TV- Criminal Minds (we started at the beginning and it's a bit jarring after the finale like I missed it) Harrow (It's Australian I think and quite good) Never Have I Ever season 2( This one was stressful because Devi was being really dumb at the beginning, but Paxton having a Regina George moment and him climbing in her window for a makeout session like a 90's serial killer boy was everything.)

Future

Want to be Published- Yes, I especially want to publish the novel I'm working on currently.

Indie or Traditional- Traditional all the way

Wildest Goal- Hmm kinda want a manga/anime made out of one of my stories. Would be cool, also think writing for tv could be fun, but I wouldn't call it a goal.

  2. I feel like you forgot to mention fae as part of your ancestry/bloodline, but then it is also very fae of you to not mention it.
And you wrote your first book at age 12 so I think especially for the time, cliches or not, it showed a ton of potential. You don't give yourself enough credit for that.

I'm so excited for Fairy and the Artist!! I really hope it turns out how you want it to because it's going to be incredible.

  3. This was so much fun getting to know more about you! Your description of your hair was my favorite. XD Absolutely love it. And that is really awesome you have such a mix of ethnicities!

I don't think I ever realized you self-published something! And hey, I still read cliche books about fairies. I never outgrew those. ;D

I totally know what you mean about some novels feeling more personal. Those are truly the special ones. And The Fairy & the Artist just sounds AMAZING. SO AMAZING. I'm seriously in love with it already!

Thanks so much for sharing this goodness with us! I loved reading about it all. ^_^

    1. Awesome! *high fives*

Her books are my favorite, especially the Howl's Moving Castle series, but I also loved the Chrestomanci series and pretty much everything I've read by her. She's brilliant isn't she.

  5. It was awesome getting to know you a bit more. I had no idea you had self-published a novel before? XD Falling Snow was exceptional though, I've said it before and I'll say it again I definitely loved that story.

    1. Thanks! It was so long ago and something I tend to try to hide, I think I got it removed from my Goodreads profile and everything. Thank you, that means so much!

Love that coincidence. It's cool right. XD

  7. I've just started 'The Dark is Rising'too - only a couple of pages in but so atmospheric already. Ages since I've read a book that I don't know anything at all about. Loved Never Have I Ever, thought this series might even be better than the first one!

  9. Okay wait, wait, wait. I feel like a celebrity right now wow hahaha thank you for your kind words Skye!
I’d like to establish that I am jealous of your Jim Hawkins hair, that if I do not read “falling snow” soon I will have a panic attack, and that I am so impressed by not only your working titles but the fact that you are juggling three projects at once in different stages of completion. Thanks for doing this tag, I really enjoyed learning more about you! Is there anywhere I can read “falling snow”?

It's one of the best decisions I've made. If you do read it, I hope you like it.
Thanks, not as impressive as it sounds. Theirs a lot of procrastination and dancing between projects. Thanks for tagging me.
It's part of an Anthology collection 'Five Poisoned Apples' and should be on Amazon.
